Sumis celebrate Tuluni

DIMAPUR: Sumi Community of New Ministers’ Hill (SCNMH), Kohima, celebrated Tuluni Festival with a vibrant cultural programme showcasing the rich traditions and heritage of the Sumi people at the official residence of Y. Kikheto Sema, Principal Secretary & Development Commissioner, on Wednesday.
According to DIPR report, speaking as host, Kikheto described Tuluni as one of the most significant festivals of the Sumi community, deeply rooted in agriculture and symbolising thanksgiving to Almighty God for a successful harvest after months of hard work. He said the festival, observed during the peak of the agricultural season, embodies abundance, gratitude, unity and fellowship, strengthening family and community bonds through shared meals, goodwill and prayers for peace and prosperity.
Emphasising that the true spirit of Tuluni lies in hard work, Kikheto urged the younger generation to return to agricultural roots, noting Nagaland’s diverse agro‑climatic conditions where crops can flourish with diligence. Drawing from the biblical account of Israel’s entry into Canaan, he contrasted the Israelites’ faith and labour with Nagaland’s fertile land but weak work culture, remarking that “our minds have become like barren land.” He called upon the Sumi community to cultivate unity and a stronger work ethic. He also urged the Sumi community in Kohima to be ambassadors of peace and harmony among all tribes, expressing gratitude to the Angami community for fostering peaceful coexistence in the State capital. Concluding his address, Kikheto extended warm Tuluni greetings to the SCNMH and all Sumi people, wishing them joy, peace and prosperity.
The celebration featured cultural items including Athi Sheküsü Le, Itsa, Ami Küküla, Lejole and Aphilo Kuwo, followed by Tuluni Ghili presented by SCNMH advisor Toniho Sheqhi, who highlighted the cultural essence of the festival.
