DIMAPUR, JUL 22 (NPN): Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha MP, S Supongmeren Jamir, has urged the Centre to restore passenger train services to Tuli, saying the move would improve connectivity and spur economic growth in the region.
Raising the issue under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha, Jamir appealed to the Ministry of Railways to revive the long-pending passenger service, noting that the Tuli railway line, which operated on metre gauge since the 1990s, was upgraded to broad gauge in 2000.
He said a successful passenger trial run between Tuli and Mariani was conducted in 2007, but regular services were never introduced despite the required infrastructure being in place.
Jamir urged the ministry to introduce passenger train services, along with a parcel van, between Dimapur and Tuli to benefit commuters, traders, students and the general public.
He also sought the extension of broad gauge passenger services from Guwahati to Tuli to strengthen connectivity between Nagaland and Upper Assam.
Highlighting the route’s commercial viability, Jamir said the existing goods train service between Amguri and Tuli generated nearly Rs. 30 crore in revenue during the last financial year, demonstrating the line’s operational and financial potential.
Stating that there was strong public demand for restoring passenger services, Jamir assured the Railways Ministry of the people’s support and urged it to take early action, saying the move would enhance regional connectivity and contribute to economic development.
