In a landmark initiative aimed at wildlife conservation and curbing substance abuse, a joint meeting of Village Council chairmen and GBs from the Suruhuto-Asuto area was held on July 17 at Suruhuto Town. The meeting was convened at the initiative of Deputy Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, S. Toiho Yeptho, and attended by representatives from 32 villages and 3 towns under the 33 Suruhuto-Asuto Assembly Constituency.
During the meeting, several key resolutions were unanimously adopted. These include a complete ban on all forms of hunting and fishing across the constituency, as part of efforts to protect wildlife and preserve the region’s natural environment. To ensure effective implementation, a Wildlife Protection Committee for the Suruhuto-Asuto area was constituted. The committee will be responsible for formulating rules and processes to safeguard flora and fauna. The gathering also resolved to impose a total ban on the sale, purchase, transport, possession, and use of illicit drugs and narcotic substances in all villages and towns of the constituency.
