Ramesh Vishwaskumar Bucharvada, who was among the 242 people onboard the ill-fated Air India flight AI171 that crashed Thursday, miraculously survived the accident.
Ramesh, a British national, was seated in seat 11A– located right behind an emergency exit– on the flight. A video taken moments after the crash shows an injured Ramesh walking towards an ambulance as bystanders surround him asking questions about the fate of the others on the plane.
“The plane exploded,” the man, speaking in Gujarati, is heard saying in the video. When the people around him ask him about the status of the other passengers, the man replies, “There are back there inside [at the crash site].”
“Thirty seconds after take-off, there was a loud noise,” Ramesh told local reporters, all of whom had milled around him with deep disbelief. “There were dead bodies around me. I got scared. I got up and ran. There were pieces of the plane everywhere,” he said.
His chest, eyes, and feet bore “impact injuries,” but he lived to tell the tale.
But the trauma didn’t end with survival. His brother Ajay Vishwaskumar, who was also on the same flight, is currently ‘missing’.
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik said that one passenger survived in the Air India plane crash, news agency ANI reported.
