SVAN, SEWA Nagaland oppose extortion; safeguard vendors’ rights

DIMAPUR: An emergency meeting between the Street Vendors Association Nagaland (SVAN) and the Self Employed Women’s Association Nagaland (SEWA Nagaland) was held at Hotel Grand Tizu, Dimapur, on July 7, 2026 where both organisations agreed on shared principles to oppose extortion, harassment and forced evictions of street vendors.
According to a press release from SVAN, representatives led by president Kughato Zhimo and general secretary Dr. Subonglemba Aier, along with other office bearers, and SEWA representatives led by president Atoli, deliberated on measures to safeguard the welfare of street vendors across Nagaland.
The meeting underscored the importance of coordinating with legal authorities to protect livelihoods and rights under the Street Vendors Act, 2019, and the rules and schemes mandated in Nagaland. It also highlighted the need to empower street vendors—particularly women and vulnerable groups—by engaging with local authorities and the Town Vending Committees of each district.
Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to promoting the well being and dignity of street vendors throughout Nagaland.
