Association of Kohima Municipal Wards Council (AKMWC) has strongly urged the responsible authority to initiate urgent effective measures to curb the menace of unleashed dogs on the lives and safety of the citizens of Kohima.
In a letter addressed to the deputy commissioner (DC) Kohima, AKMWC president Thejao Sekhose and legal advisor Hukato Chishi stated that numerous colony councils have initiated measures to curb the menace of unleashed dogs and the danger it posed to the lives and safety the citizens under the municipality of Kohima.
However, AKMWC said the district administration and KMC have issued orders nullifying such measures. On March 15, 2025, the association said a 3-year-old child of Lower PWD Colony, Kohima was severely mauled by an unleashed dog, permanently scarred and fighting for his life.
The association has questioned how many dog kernels were set up to house the impounded dogs, how many dog catchers were employed to catch unleashed dogs and what measures have been taken to protect the lives and safety of the citizens of Kohima town.
AKMWC stated that administration cannot afford to bury its head in the sand and wish the problem away. The association has demanded immediate and adequate monetary compensation for the innocent victim.
