Luira, a festival of seed sowing which is pronounced as ‘Luiruh’ and one of the most important and major festivals of the Tangkhuls was celebrated by Tangkhul Union Dimapur (TUD) here on Monday at Darogajan Tangkhul Baptist Church premises along with retired Registrar of Guahati High Court, Kohima Bench and president of Tangkhul Hoho Nagaland, Shai Raleng, as the chief guest.
The programme started with the unveiling of the flag by the chief guest followed with speech in which the chief guest appreciated the Tangkhul Union Dimapur for organizing such programme which the youngsters could learn about the past tradition and cultures of their community. He also asked the gathering not to forget the traditional values of the forefathers and also encouraged the upcoming generations in their studies.
He revealed that Tangkhul Hoho Nagaland has decided to confer academic award for those who passed out from Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE) starting from this academic year to encourage in their studies.
Further, he appealed the Tangkhul Union Dimapur to lead in initiating the construction of Tangkhul Hoho building at Darogajan and wished everybody to have a blessed time during the day.
Speech on the significance of the festival was delivered by Kathing Kashung where he said that Luira is the festival to renew and uphold the bond of love relationship between brothers and sisters and to keep intact the feeling of oneness among themselves with the feeling of love.
Various cultural folk songs and indigenous sports activity such as tug of war and javelin throw have marked the celebration.
The programme was chaired by Aphung Kapingh and vote of thanks was delivered by Tangkhul union Dimapur vice president Tuithing Kasar.
Besides indigenous games, men, women and children in traditional attire presented the rich cultural heritage.
