Teachers’ Day celebrated across districts with tributes, awards and reflections

Teachers’ Day 2025 was celebrated across Nagaland on September 5 with heartfelt tributes, cultural performances, and recognition of educators’ contributions to society.
PUGHOBOTO: At Pughoboto, the Sub-Divisional Planning & Development Board (SDPDB) organised a combined Teachers’ Day celebration at the Pughoboto Headquarters with MLA of 13 Pughoboto A/C, Dr. Sukhato A. Sema, as the special guest. Paying rich tributes to teachers, Dr. Sukhato described them as “architects and pillars of society.” Reflecting on his own journey as the son of a village school teacher, he credited his success to the dedication of educators and urged students to uphold values of discipline and respect. He also lauded the achievement of seven successful NPSC candidates from his constituency, attributing their success to their teachers.
The programme featured greetings from ADC Pughoboto, Tiameren Chang, special performances by students, and a speech by Alovili H. Wotsa from Mission School on behalf of the teaching community. A special prayer for teachers was offered, followed by a vote of thanks from Hutoka Assumi, President of Sumi Aphuyemi Kiphimi Kuqhakulu. The event concluded with a benediction by Pastor Hukato Sheqi of NCRC Pughoboto.
PHEK: In Phek, Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) celebrated the occasion at Town Hall under the theme “Inspiring the Next Generation of Learners.” Senior Principal Kumar Uma Shankar highlighted the legacy of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan and encouraged teachers to take pride in their role as nation-builders. The event featured cultural performances, a welcome song by Higher Secondary/Science students, and a special prayer for teachers. Kezivi, Science Teacher of GHSS Phek, was conferred a Meritorious Award for his dedicated service.
WOKHA: District Education Department, Wokha held a commemorative programme at VDB Hall, Wokha. Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Echungbemo Erui, graced the occasion as special guest and spoke on the transformative role of teachers in shaping society. DEO Wokha, Gwayhunle Tep, delivered the welcome address, reaffirming the department’s commitment to quality education. A special prayer was offered by Rev. Father Stephen Chazhsseril.
Students from Government Middle School, Wokha Town C, and Government Higher Secondary School, Wokha, presented cultural items. Four teachers were honoured for exemplary service: Khonzani Tsanglao (PGT, GHSS Wokha), Lipenthung Odyuo (GT, GPS Phiro), Y. Benchumo Shitio (PT, GMS Okotso), and L. Mhaden Jungio (AT, Regimental School, DEF Wokha). The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Senior SDEO Raphael Zubonthung.
SHAMATOR: In Shamator district, Government Middle School (GMS) Y. Anner marked the occasion with a programme organised by the School Management Committee (SMC), led by chairman L. Mukam Yimkhiung. Yimkhiung thanked teachers for their sacrifices and noted the positive change in the village school, which now functions without proxy teachers. He encouraged students to study diligently, citing that many senior gazetted officers of the Yimkhiung tribe were products of government schools.
Christian High School, Shamator, also celebrated the day with cultural performances, songs, dances, and traditional displays. Student speaker Ahola Yimkhiung honoured teachers for their guidance, while Assistant Teacher Mukam expressed gratitude to students and urged them to pursue their goals with determination. The Best Teacher Award was conferred on Kewongkhum.
TENING: In Tening, Peren district, the Liangmai Students’ Union Nagaland (LSUN) organised a Combined Teachers’ Day cum Cultural Day under the theme “Honouring Wisdom, Celebrating Culture.” ADC Tening, K. Furhesie Nyuwi, NCS, graced the event as special guest and highlighted the role of teachers in shaping society and preserving cultural identity. The programme featured an invocation by Rev. Wichampau Nchang, greetings from LSUN president Maisithuibo, and performances by students from various institutions including St. Francis de School, Zeliangrong Heraka School, Baptist High School, and Government Higher Secondary School Tening.
MON: In Mon district, the Department of School Education organised a Teachers’ Day celebration at Town Council Hall under the theme “Empowering Educators for a Progressive Future.” Deputy Commissioner Mon, Wennyei Konyak, NCS, addressed the gathering and described teachers as the cornerstone of the educational system. He acknowledged their role in nation-building and saluted those serving in remote areas.
Awardee T. Limawapang, PGT, GHSS Mon, spoke on behalf of the honoured teachers, while Kemya T Konyak of St. Mary’s School highlighted the significance of the day and described teachers as real-life heroes. District Awards were presented to T. Limawapang (GHSS Mon), S. Tingjei (GPS Longting), Omjay Kumar (Sacred Heart School), and C. Wannyei (Christ King High School). The programme featured songs, choreography, and prayers, with welcome and vote of thanks delivered by Sr. SDEO & DEO (In-charge) Rose Ngullie and AEO A. Bejem respectively.
TSEMINYU: In Tseminyu district, a Teachers’ Day cum Teachers’ Award celebration was held at Baptist Higher Secondary School, Tseminyu New Town. ADC Tseminyu, Kikumsangla Jamir, attended as special guest. The programme began with an invocation by Principal GHSS Tseminyu, Hichulo Semy, and a welcome note by Principal BHSS Tseminyu, Wasenmo Apon.
SDEO/DEO Tseminyu, Asao Seb, presented the district awards to GT (Hindi) Agwale Khing of GHSS Tseminyu and Primary Teacher Ruchuyhunle Kent of GPS Kasha.

AHM Sohile Tep expressed words of gratitude. Highlights included a special number by AG School Tseminyu, a cultural presentation by GHS Tseminyu New Town, and a tribute by Sosinle Cheng of Class 9, GHS Kasha.
NSDMA, Naga Ed: At the state-level celebration, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), in collaboration with the Department of School Education and NagaEd, highlighted the success of Phase 2 of the School Safety Policy Compliance Course. Four schools received the “School Safety Excellence Awards” for outstanding participation. The schools were: Government Middle School Dobagaon, Dimapur, Government Middle School Naga New Model Sumi, Dimapur, St. Joseph’s School, Tuensang Town and The Vineyard, Kohima. NagaEd’s Aonok Aier emphasized the importance of disaster preparedness in education.
KIPHIRE: In Kiphire, a grand celebration was held at Hopongkyu Memorial Hall. DEO Chuba Aier led the programme attended by students and staff from various schools. ADEO T. Lirila Sangtam delivered the welcome address. District Teachers’ Awards were presented to Atiba Sangtam, Sonal Yimchunger, and Kiutsumong. Dr. Phyobenthung, Principal of ZPGC, was the special guest.
