DIMAPUR: Nagaland Education Association (NEA), in collaboration with the Department of Education, Nagaland University and Department of Education, Alder College, Kohima, organised a State Level One Day Workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and SWAYAM for teaching faculty at Alder College, Kohima.
Delivering the welcome address, NEA president, Dr. Bweyhunle Khing, highlighted the growing significance of AI in education and stressed the need to equip teachers, students and administrators with knowledge and skills to engage effectively with emerging technologies. She described SWAYAM as a vital platform for disadvantaged students, in service teachers, working professionals and lifelong learners, enabling access to courses at their own pace without tuition fees.
Reflecting on the role of teachers, Dr. Khing described education as the “godmother of all professions,” reminding participants that no profession exists without teachers. She urged educators to be active, responsible and well informed in the digital era, calling teachers “architects of the future.”
The first technical session on “Artificial Intelligence in Education” was conducted by Moasunep Kichu, Technical Officer, Department of IT, NIELIT Kohima. He introduced participants to AI fundamentals from an educator’s perspective, emphasising that AI would not replace teachers but could reduce administrative burdens and allow more meaningful student interaction. He demonstrated a four stage teacher AI workflow, discussed prompt engineering, and outlined applications of AI in lesson planning, teaching preparation and research. He also highlighted the “4 Vs” of responsible AI use-Verify, Validate, Value Privacy and Vigilance.
The second technical session on SWAYAM was conducted by Dr. Boyillapalli Venkata Rao, Associate Professor, Department of Education, Nagaland University. He outlined opportunities offered by SWAYAM, encouraged institutions to appoint dedicated coordinators, and explained the importance of Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) ID in relation to SWAYAM and the broader role of MOOCs in expanding access to flexible, quality education.
