NEW DELHI, JUL 8 (NPN): Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday announced that Telangana will host the eighth edition of the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), which is expected to be held in November this year.
Announcing the decision, Mandaviya said the choice of Telangana was in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of taking major national sporting events to different regions of the country. He said Telangana had the necessary infrastructure and the enthusiasm to successfully stage the prestigious Games, which are expected to bring together at least 8,000 athletes, officials and support staff.
The Union minister also expressed confidence that the competition would witness high-quality performances, noting that the Khelo India Youth Games would be held after the 2026 Asian Games in Japan. He said the event would provide an opportunity for emerging athletes to compete in top form and interact closely with established sporting stars. Telangana will become the second southern state to host the Khelo India Youth Games in the last three editions. Tamil Nadu hosted the 2024 edition, while Bihar staged the seventh edition in May 2025.
In the 2025 Games, Maharashtra topped the medal standings, followed by Haryana and Rajasthan. Host Bihar finished 15th, while Telangana ended the competition in 13th place. During the 2024 edition in Tamil Nadu, the hosts finished second behind Maharashtra, with Telangana securing sixth place overall. The Bihar edition featured 28 sports disciplines. Medals were awarded in 27 sports, while e-sports made its debut as a demonstration event.
A total of 26 records were broken during the Games, including 13 national youth records, all in weightlifting. The remaining records were meet records, all achieved in athletics.
