Observing World Mental Health Day 2025, the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare (H&FW) Nagaland officially launched the ‘Video Consultation of Tele MANAS’ at its conference hall in Kohima on October 10.
According to DIPR report, the launch was graced by secretary, H&FW, S. Tainiu, as special guest.
Tele MANAS is a Government of India initiative under the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP), offering free 24/7 tele-mental health services nationwide. It provides counselling, psychotherapy, and psychiatric consultations through a toll-free helpline (14416) and a mobile application, with linkages to in-person services when required.
Speaking on the occasion, Tainiu stated that the theme for World Mental Health Day 2025—“Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies”—underscores the urgent need for mental health support during crises such as natural disasters, conflicts, and humanitarian emergencies.
She highlighted that World Mental Health Day was first observed on October 10, 1992, initiated by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) to raise awareness and encourage support for those facing mental health challenges.
Tainiu noted that the world is witnessing a rise in humanitarian emergencies—from wars and pandemics to natural disasters and social unrest—leading to trauma, grief, anxiety, and depression. Despite this, mental health care remains one of the most neglected and underfunded areas in emergency response.
She emphasized that Nagaland’s unique geography and socio-cultural context makes the theme especially relevant, citing the impact of landslides, floods, and community tensions on emotional well-being. She called for greater awareness to reduce stigma, promote early intervention, and foster a supportive environment that enhances coping skills and strengthens relationships.
Concluding her address, Tainiu urged collective efforts to ensure that no one faces mental health crises alone, and stressed the importance of making mental healthcare accessible, equitable, and culturally sensitive for all.
