Tense situation erupts in Maikhuli village along Meghalaya-Assam border

CorrespondentShillong, Aug 18

Tension gripped Maikhuli village along the inter-state border between Meghalaya and Assam on Monday after local residents dismantled electricity poles erected by Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL).
Residents of Maikhuli village objected to APDCL’s electricity pole installation in their village stating that the Assam government illegally installed the poles near the Maikhuli pond which they claimed is within Meghalaya.
On seeing the villagers from Meghalaya pulling down the electric poles, a group of people from Assam confronted them, thereby leading to an altercation and scuffle between villagers from Meghalaya and Assam.
During the scuffle, some of the women folks from Maikhuli were manhandled, and their clothes were torn.
On being alerted of the tense situation, District authorities from Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi and Assam’s Kamrup Metro accompanied by police officials rushed to Maikhuli village to disperse the angry residents and bring the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the district authorities from Meghalaya and Assam formed a Peace Committee to ensure peace and calm among the border residents in both the States.
