TGOUN to spearhead ‘clean up the earth’ campaign

State govt. urged to implement ‘Clean Nagaland Project’

‘Clean Up The Earth’ (CUTE) campaign would be launched with the active cooperation of The Global Open University Nagaland (TGOUN) and its staff along with students enrolled under the distance education programme from various countries, world renowned environmental scientist and management educator, chancellor Dr. Priya Ranjan Trivedi said on Wednesday.
Inaugurating the 36th World Management Congress 2015 organized on the occasion of the World Management Education Day under the theme “Cleaning Up The Earth (CUTE): Challenges and Dimensions” at Paryavaran Auditorium, Dr. Trivedi, who is one of the convenor for CUTE, highlighted the urgent need of understanding the critical path of introducing action oriented plans in the areas of cleaning, hygiene, sanitation and pollution control in the cities and towns in India as well as in the rest of the world with proper use of the cleaner as well as cleaning up technologies.
He also appealed and sought the cooperation of Nagaland government to make any department as the nodal department to implement ‘Clean Nagaland Project’ as a model to replicate the same in the remaining seven Northeastern States.
Stressing the importance of hygiene, Dr. Trivedi said hygiene is a set of practices performed for the preservation of health.
Citing numerous examples of proper sanitation in India, he explained that sanitation was the hygienic means of promoting health through prevention of human contact with the hazards of wastes as well as the treatment and proper disposal of sewage or wastewater. He further noted that hygienic means of prevention could be done by using engineering solutions– sewerage, wastewater treatment, stormwater drainage, solid waste management, excreta management including simple technologies like pit latrines, dry toilets, UDDTs, septic tanks, or even simply by personal hygiene practices.
He lauded Prime Ministers Narendra Modi’s vision on cleanliness with the launch of countrywide Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Dr. Trivedi also highlighted about the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA), a Community-led total sanitation program initiated by Government of India in 1999.
He said community-led total sanitation is not focused on building infrastructure, but on changing cultural norms to prevent open defecation.
Presenting the keynote address, Prof. Gregory Berglund, CEO, The Planet Earth said that the pollution level of Rome and Milan in Italy is equally worse like that of Delhi. He further added that vehicles are not allowed to ply in Milan between 8 am and 4 pm. He wanted practical solutions for Delhi rather than whatever will be done from January 1, 2016.
Earlier, the welcome address was presented by Utkarsh Sharma, director, ACCORD who announced that the Clean and Green Continent Project will be implemented soon in all countries in the African, Asian and American continents.
