Thenucho Tunyi assures support to Dimapur Railway High School

DIMAPUR: Former Nagaland Home Minister and veteran Naga leader, Thenucho Tunyi, has assured support for the welfare and development of Dimapur Railway High School (DRHS) following his visit to the institution on November 7.
Tunyi visited the school along with DRHS Ex Students Forum of Nagaland chairman, Bishnu Bhattacharjee, and other members of the forum. During the visit, he interacted with the school in-charge, teaching staff and alumni members, and discussed issues concerning the welfare, improvement and future development of the institution.
According to a press release issued by the forum, the interaction provided an opportunity to exchange views, with both sides expressing willingness to work together and extend mutual cooperation towards the progress of the school.
The forum felicitated Tunyi and expressed gratitude for his visit, encouragement and goodwill. During the interaction, Tunyi expressed willingness to extend guidance and support in an advisory capacity. He also assured that, as a senior Naga leader, he would extend support and intervention whenever required in matters concerning the welfare, educational interests and future prospects of students in Nagaland.
As a follow-up initiative, a delegation of the DRHS Ex Students Forum will visit the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) headquarters at Maligaon, Guwahati, to meet the general manager and principal chief personnel officer (PCPO). The delegation will formally invite the two senior officials to attend the forthcoming Platinum Jubilee celebration of the school. It will also apprise them of the present condition of the institution, highlight concerns over deteriorating infrastructure and seek their intervention and possible support for its welfare, improvement and overall development.
Established in 1951, just a few years after India’s Independence, DRHS is among the oldest educational institutions in Nagaland. Located in the heart of Dimapur, the school was founded through the collective efforts of seven social workers and railway employees belonging to the Bengali linguistic community.
From its establishment until 1997, the school was developed, supported and maintained through the contributions of leaders and members of the Bengali community associated with its management. Subsequently, its management was handed over to NF Railway, which assumed responsibility for running the institution through its railway administration.
Over the decades, DRHS has contributed to the educational development of Nagaland, with thousands of students passing through its classrooms and contributing to society in various capacities. Its teachers and staff have guided generations of students and helped shape their careers, earning the institution a special place among former students and the wider community.
However, the forum expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the school’s infrastructure, stating that several facilities were inadequate and required urgent attention and intervention.
The DRHS Ex Students Forum has been making efforts to bring the concerns to the attention of railway authorities and the government, and remains committed to pursuing support for infrastructure development, improvement of educational facilities and the overall revival of the institution.
As the school completes 75 years since its establishment, its Platinum Jubilee celebration will be held on December 18, 19 and 20, 2026.
On the occasion, the forum has appealed to railway authorities, government representatives, public leaders, former students, well-wishers and concerned citizens to join the celebration, help preserve the institution’s legacy and contribute towards securing its future.
The forum stated that the Platinum Jubilee was not merely a celebration of 75 years but also an opportunity to renew the collective commitment towards education, unity and progress, while honouring the contributions of those who established and nurtured the institution.
