Manipur CM condemns killing incidents
IMPHAL, Sep 13: Two persons including a woman were killed as the vehicle they were travelling came under gun attack by armed miscreants in Manipur’s Noney district late Sunday afternoon.
With the death of the two persons, the death toll in two separate gun violence incidents reported in Tamenglong and Noney districts respectively surged to three.
Earlier, in an attack carried out by suspected militants at a village in Tamenglong district, a woman was killed and her husband and their youngest son were injured.
In the later attack in Noney, reports said that a group of armed miscreants suspected to be militants ambushed a civilian vehicle with three occupants in it along the NH-37 near Longpi village under Nungba police station in Noney district this afternoon.
In the ambush, two occupants, including a woman were killed, and the third occupant, a woman, reportedly went missing.
Reports said that the attackers opened fire on the vehicle loaded with rice heading toward their village, Sempat Vangkho.
The deceased woman was identified as Julie Gangte while the male was identified as Thangvel Gangte, both residents of Sempat Vangkho in Noney district. The details of the missing woman could not be confirmed till the time of filing this report.
Reports said that security forces rushed to the ambush site and launched an operation to hunt down the attackers as well as trace the missing woman.
Following the attacks involving casualties, armed miscreants launched an attack on a Naga village in Jiribam district, torching three to four houses this evening. A report said that three to four houses belonging to the Rongmei (Naga) tribe at Khedaghar village under Jiribam police station were burnt this around 6.30 pm on Sunday.
Khedaghar village is located around 12 km south of Jiribam police station. Any casualty in the arson incident could not be confirmed till the time of filing this report.
Manipur chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has expressed deep anguish over the two separate heinous killing incidents reported in hill districts today.
Chief Minister’s Secretariat, in a post on social media it handles, wrote that chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has expressed deep anguish over the heinous killing of two innocent civilians at Tollen Kuki village under Kaimai police station in Tousem sub-division of Tamenglong district and the loss of two more precious lives in a gun attack by unidentified armed miscreants at Longpi village under Nungba police station in Noney district, on Sunday.
He stated that such cowardly acts of violence against innocent civilians were unacceptable and has no place in our society.
The chief minister extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families, praying for strength to the bereaved and a speedy recovery for the injured, the post stated.
The post mentioned the two deaths in the Tolen village attack.
