Senior BJP leader and MLA, Alexander Laloo Hek on Tuesday said that three former MLAs from different political parties will be joining the saffron party following the BJP’s landslide victory in the West Bengal and Assam assembly elections.
“Many political leaders, who include sitting and former MLAs and MDCs, have contacted me and shown interest in joining the BJP. We are hopeful that they will be part of the BJP family soon,” he said.
Hek said the three former MLAs including Pynshngainlang Syiem, Dr. Jemino Mawthoh and Mohendro Rapsang will be joining the BJP later this month. “BJP leaders have held several rounds of discussions with the three leaders. They have expressed their willingness to join BJP after seeing the seriousness of the BJP to bring economic growth to the State,” the veteran BJP leader said, Syiem, the former Working President of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee, quit the Congress after the party’s central leadership failed to respond to the concerns and to revamp the party organisation in the State.
In May 2025, Mawthoh resigned as General Secretary of the United Democratic Party, citing “unavoidable circumstances” and that his decision was purely “personal”. Rapsang resigned from the primary membership of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) in February 2026, citing personal reasons.
Further, Hek also informed that BJP is also holding talks with the Leader of the Opposition and veteran Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, Dr. Mukul Sangma to join the saffron party.
The BJP, with its two MLAs, is a minor ally of the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance
“Mukul has neither accepted or rejected our invitation to join the BJP, but he had sought more time. I think he is still consulting his party’s MLAs. We are hopeful that he and his MLAs would be part of the BJP family soon,” the BJP leader said.
The TMC has five MLAs in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly.
“BJP’s target for the 2028 Assembly elections is to form a BJP-led government in Meghalaya,” Hek said.
