Tikhir community celebrated Tsonglak-nyi festival at Kiusam Town from October 9 to 12 under the theme ‘Pojü vila peinü mütsin vi-ei’ meaning ‘Live culturally by Traditional’. A common celebration was held on October 10, bringing together elders, youth and dignitaries in a spirit of unity and cultural pride.
Rev. Fr. Thomas Toretkiu, speaking on the theme, exhorted the gathering to embrace and practice traditional values, beliefs and customs. He emphasized the importance of transmitting cultural legacy to younger generations through dance, music, art and storytelling. “Our culture is our identity,” he said, stating that values such as sanctification, humility before God, sharing and neighbourly care must be preserved to foster community cohesion.
He further stated that Tsonglak-nyi is a time of renewal, introspection and relationship-building, and warned that neglecting cultural traditions could lead to loss of identity. He urged elders to actively teach and encourage youth to learn and uphold the community’s rich heritage. The programme witnessed speeches from Teachang, committee chairman; T. Thangpong, head GB; S. Khesang, public leader; Muraimong, Hd. DB, Kiusam HQ; and M.K. Shukiu, who spoke on the history and significance of Tsonglak-nyi. The celebration began with a prayer led by P. Rangthong, KTBC pastor, and concluded with a prayer by Samuel Kurak, Catechist, SJCKT. Donations and contributions were made by dignitaries and attendees. A cultural dance was performed, followed by a community meal.
To mark the occasion, a football penalty kick competition was organised by Hunter-11, with eight teams participating. The Young Stars emerged as champions of the event.
