The political landscape of West Bengal has been irrevocably altered by the seismic events of the 2026 assembly elections, which witnessed the dramatic implosion of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Once the undisputed sovereign of Bengali politics, the party founded by Mamata Banerjee, a figure synonymous with fierce resistance and a street fighter appeal, is imploding . Today this party is collapsing like a house of cards in a spectacular manner in a space of just a week or so after election results and not one month six months or one year. This is the story of a woman who rose from the streets to the very top. Mamata Banerjee was a political David when she took on the Marxist Goliath and dealt it a fatal blow in 2011. Her brand of politics was raw and agitational. She left the Congress party years ago because they were afraid to fight the Left. She built the TMC in her own image: “TMC is Mamata and Mamata is TMC.” By 2021, she was the most powerful woman in regional politics, with 29 MPs and 213 assembly seats. But even the strongest rulers have their weakness. For Mamata, that weakness was her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee. By unofficially crowning him as her heir, she invited a disaster she did not see coming. Abhishek became the “chink in her armour.” Under his influence, the party’s image shifted from a people’s movement to something critics called a “mafia gang.” While Mamata watched from the sidelines, allegations of corruption and strong-arm tactics grew. The party lost its soul, and the leader lost her connection to the streets. After the electoral debacle , the opportunists, like rats, began jumping from the sinking TMC ship. These were the ones who got elected under Mamata’s patronage but are now bad mouthing her. They are the same people who enjoyed power and privilege for years and suddenly , after the electoral debacle, decided the party was “wrong” all along. They aren’t leaving because of principle; they are leaving because they need power. Power is a flame that attracts many, but once the light fades, the “insects” vanish and the darkness takes over. These rebels are a “prize” for the BJP and Narendra Modi. Led by BJP chief minister Suvendu Adhikari(once Mamata’s second lieutenant) and one who knows their secrets-the deserters are joining the NDA to escape the heat of CBI and ED raids. Their exit makes Modi less dependent on allies like the TDP or JDU and leaves Mamata’s benches empty. In desperation, Mamata is now turning to the Congress. She has a good rapport with Sonia Gandhi, but the same cannot be said for Rahul Gandhi. A merger might seem like a lifeline, but it is a dangerous gamble. More importantly, the “heirs”-Abhishek and Rahul-cannot work together. Their styles are too different to match. Some would write Mamata’s epitaph but they have to reckon with a gutsy street fighter who is able to wage a long war. She had come back from the brink before. But before that she must endure and fight the expected dozens of cases that the BJP will file against her and her nephew. The Stormy petrel of Bengal must find her way back to the streets and away from the dynastic shadows to reclaim her kingdom.
