DIMAPUR: Thirty four students of TM Government Higher Secondary School (TMGHSS), Kohima received free spectacles from the Department of Health & Family Welfare on August 4 under the National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCB & VI).
Speaking at the distribution programme, Dr. Phyantsuthung, Joint Director & Programme Officer NPCB & VI, highlighted key initiatives under the programme, which include prevention of cataract, provision of reading glasses for elders, school based eye screening and promotion of eye donation.
He acknowledged the positive response received from schools towards student eye screening. Dr. Phyantsuthung explained that an Autorefractor, a computerised eye testing device, is used to ensure accurate screening for the provision of free spectacles.
He further informed that the State has set a target of identifying 7,200 beneficiaries during 2026 27.
He instructed students on the proper use of spectacles and urged them to reduce screen time to protect their eyesight.
Principal Kelhikha Kenye expressed gratitude to the Department for supporting students with much needed spectacles and creating awareness among students and teachers on maintaining good eye health.
The programme was also attended by vice principal Er. Khriezosietuo Suohu and Graduate Teacher Liza Zhimomi.
