Tobu area public have once again reaffirmed the December 12, 2017 ENPO resolution declaring peace zone under its jurisdiction.
A peace rally was held at Tobu town in protest against the May 26 incident where two Assam Rifles personnel were killed and four others injured in an ambush near Thanyak hydro project, between Tobu and Ukha villages.
After short speeches were delivered by representatives of Konyak Union (KU) Tobu unit, Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK) Tobu unit and Tobu Area Students Union (TASU), the rally began from Bazaar junction.
In their speeches, representatives of three organisations highlighted the need for peace, especially in a place like Tobu where such incidents are occurring despite repeated appeals by the community to maintain peace.
Condemning the act of violence that threatens to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of Tobu, Konyak Union Tobu branch vice-president Tiyeang Ngontang explained that the objective of the rally was to send a strong message towards any group responsible for the May 26 incident that people were against such acts of violence in the area.
Addressing the gathering, TASU president Sangti Konyak expressed his condolences on behalf of people of Tobu area to the bereaved of the two Assam Rifles jawans killed in the “unfortunate incident”. He stressed that no development can happen without peace and that such incidents always harmed the peaceful coexistence among the community.
The rally that stared at 9 am was attended by around 1,000 participants, mostly women.
After the rally, the participants went to ADC office to submit a memorandum addressed to Mon deputy commissioner, demanding urgent intervention of the administration to maintain peace as well as upgrade Tobu police station to SDPO office. The memorandum was handed over to the ADC at his office by TASU president Sangti Konyak. This was stated in a press release by TASU press & corresponding secretary Moba AS.
Meanwhile, according to intelligence sources, the attack was reportedly carried by Aug Yung led NSCN (K) cadres. Sources said an eight member team carried out the ambush.
