Traffic police, DUCCF step up road safety drive

Staff Reporter

In a coordinated effort to improve road safety and traffic management, the Dimapur traffic police and the Dimapur urban council chairmen federation (DUCCF) have undertaken a series of joint initiatives across the city.
On Tuesday, a joint team carried out inspections starting from Clock Tower Junction to Notun Bosti and Dhobinala Junction.
Speaking to media persons, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), I Meren Chenth, informed that the drive follows a meeting held on February 19, during which critical road safety issues were discussed. Subsequent joint inspections with road safety experts identified key locations requiring immediate installation of safety infrastructure such as signage, rumblers, blinkers, and speed breakers. A recent inspection conducted along with DUCCF officials confirmed that the installed works were satisfactory.
Authorities noted that while these may appear as minor interventions, they were expected to significantly contribute to safer roads in the long run. Similar inspections were also carried out at Purana Bazaar Junction.
Meanwhile, installation of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and colour night-vision CCTV cameras was underway at four strategic locations — Dhobinalla Junction, Tragopan Point, Purana Bazaar Traffic Point, and Nagarjan Traffic Point.
A centralized control room is also being set up at the new building in the Police Colony to enable real-time traffic monitoring and effective enforcement against violators.
Officials expressed serious concern over repeated theft and vandalism of public infrastructure, including copper wiring from traffic signals and batteries from blinkers, even solar-powered ones.
They appealed to citizens to take collective responsibility in protecting public property.
DUCCF vice chairman Tongzuk described the collaboration as a “proud moment” and appreciated the traffic department’s efforts. He listed several locations identified for improvement, including Dobinalla, Clock Tower, Notun Bosti, and DC Court Junction, where measures such as improved signage, street lighting, and speed breakers are being implemented.
Tongzuk also urged the power department to immediately address non-functional streetlights, warning that poor illumination contributes to road accidents.
DUCCF joint secretary Makuran Rongmei echoed the appeal for responsible driving and informed that the federation has already filed two FIRs this year against individuals involved in damaging public property like road dividers and electric poles.
He called for stricter accountability and advocated for more CCTV cameras at accident-prone zones to deter violations and aid in identifying hit-and-run offenders.
Both the Dimapur traffic police and DUCCF have reaffirmed their commitment to sustained collaboration for making Dimapur’s roads safer for all.
