DIMAPUR: A one‑day training programme on Best Management Practices (BMPs) in Fisheries for fish farmers under Training and Extension, implemented by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, was held at Shamator Village Council Hall on May 11.
According to DIPR report, addressing the programme, District Fisheries Officer (DFO) Shamator, Shamyung O. Ongh, highlighted the importance of fisheries in food security, livelihood generation and economic development. She emphasised that adopting BMPs is essential to ensure sustainable fish production and protect aquatic resources.
Ongh encouraged farmers to maintain good pond hygiene, use quality fish seed and feed, and regularly monitor water quality parameters such as oxygen level, pH and temperature. She cautioned against overstocking, which could lead to disease outbreaks and poor growth, and stressed timely health management and proper disposal of dead fish to prevent infections. Farmers were also advised to conserve water resources and avoid polluting nearby rivers, lakes and wetlands.
She further urged fish farmers to attend training and awareness programmes to learn modern scientific techniques, improve productivity and increase income, while underscoring the importance of sustainable fisheries management to ensure healthy aquatic ecosystems for future generations.
Assistant fisheries inspector (AFI) Shamator, Ruth Kikon, conducted a practical demonstration on pond liming and proper fish feeding techniques to help farmers understand scientific fish farming practices. Altogether, around 40 fish farmers participated in the training.
