Training on Earth Observation & GIS in Water Resources underway

DIMAPUR: A two week training on “Earth Observation and GIS in Water Resources Engineering and Management” commenced at the Water Resources Department, Kohima on September 28, 2026. The programme was organised by the Water Resources Department, Nagaland in collaboration with the National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), North Eastern Regional Centre, Guwahati, a DIPR report stated.
The training will provide critical spatial data, modelling frameworks and monitoring tools essential for modern water resources engineering and management. Sessions will focus on applications in water resources and groundwater management, surface water and watershed analysis, hydrological modelling and disasters, irrigation and infrastructure planning.
Delivering the keynote address, Chief Engineer WRD, Er. Thepfusalie Guozi, acknowledged NIH Guwahati for its continued support and mentoring. He also appreciated the resource persons, both present physically and in hybrid mode. Guozi stressed that global water resources management was vital for the survival of humanity, mentioning that every action has wider consequences in the context of global warming and natural calamities. He urged trainees to make full use of the programme and avail maximum knowledge from the experts.
Scientist B, NIH NERC, Siddharth Arora, in his address, described the training as the beginning of a long collaboration between NIH and WRD Nagaland.
He encouraged participants to learn and extract the maximum from the sessions, assuring assistance in resolving doubts. Arora said the training was structured to enable participants to apply the knowledge in their routine departmental work.
He added that with incentives from both central and state governments to adopt the latest technologies, NIH would demonstrate their use so that WRD can undertake independent studies with NIH’s support.
