DIMAPUR, MAY 28 (NPN): Tribal Council, Purana Bazar, under East Dimapur, has appealed to the advisor for Urban Development & Municipal Affairs to urgently address the garbage disposal crisis and public health concerns in East Dimapur.
In a memorandum to the advisor, the council chairman Tohoshe Awomi stated that public of East Dimapur had high hopes following the formation of the East Dimapur Council through the ULB election, expecting meaningful development, better administration and improved living conditions. However, the council stated that development should not remain limited to roads and drainage systems alone, but must also address issues affecting the health, safety, environment and dignity of the people.
The council said residents of East Dimapur were currently facing a major crisis due to the absence of a proper garbage disposal and waste management system, adding that garbage was being openly dumped in the middle of the city and along the National Highway, creating an unhealthy and unbearable environment.
According to the council, foul smell from the waste has made it difficult for commuters, nearby residents, shopkeepers, students and pedestrians to pass through the area comfortably, while the garbage accumulation was also becoming a serious public health hazard.
Stating that the issue concerned the health, dignity and well-being of thousands of citizens, the council urged the government and concerned authorities to treat the matter as a priority issue and not delay action further.
The council further appealed for immediate identification and purchase of a permanent and scientifically managed garbage dumping and waste processing site, besides implementation of proper waste management policies, regular garbage collection systems, sanitation monitoring and environmental safety measures without delay.
It expressed hope that the matter would receive urgent attention before the situation worsens further.
