Tribal farmers urged to go for onion cultivation

A seed distribution programme for onion beneficiaries was held on December 19 at New Socüünoma village, Chumukedima and Bade village. A press release by the department stated that the programme was organised by All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on vegetable crops, department of Horticulture, Nagaland Centre, School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASRD), Nagaland University under TSP (Tribal Sub Plan) – Onion.

The release stated that looking at the consumption and production rate of onion in Nagaland, director of ICAR- directorate of onion and garlic research, Rajgurunagar, Pune, Maharashtra, Dr. Major Singh and principle investigator, TSP-Onion, professor Akali Sema, felt the need to popularize onion cultivation among tribal farmers of Nagaland.

In this regard, CO-PIs of TSP-Onion, Nagaland Centre, Dr. Aastik Jha, Dr. Waluniba and Dr. Moakala Changkiri distributed rabi onion seeds to the best performing beneficiaries to encourage and popularize onion cultivation.
