A Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor of ward 22 in Burdwan town, West Bengal, has been arrested on charges of obstructing police work. The accused, Narugopal Bhakat, was taken into custody during a raid conducted by a team of central forces and local police early on Monday morning.
The unrest began on Saturday when tensions escalated between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP in the locality. Police received reports and promptly arrived at the scene. However, allegations emerged that Narugopal was preventing officers from entering the area, stating that they must notify him as the local councillor before conducting any investigation. His actions reportedly included standing guard and verbally confronting police personnel.
This arrest comes just two days before the second phase of voting in West Bengal’s assembly elections, scheduled for Wednesday. The situation has heightened tensions in the region, prompting additional security measures from the Election Commission to ensure a free and fair electoral process. As more forces are deployed to mitigate potential unrest, both local authorities and the election body are focused on maintaining order during this critical time.
