Police in South Dinajpur district arrested Babu Chowdhury, a local Trinamool Congress leader, four days after the shooting of party worker Shiva Chowdhury near Gangarampur Police Station. The firearm used in the attack has been recovered, and six people have been arrested in total.
Acting on a tip-off, police raided a relative’s house in Malda to apprehend the prime accused. CCTV footage and witness statements confirmed Babu Chowdhury’s involvement. Shiva Chowdhury remains under treatment at Gangarampur Super Speciality Hospital.
The incident has sparked political debate ahead of elections. While the Trinamool Congress leadership has yet to take disciplinary action, local BJP leaders criticized the party’s silence. District Trinamool President Subhash Bhowal stated that criminals have no place in the party and promised action if allegations are proven.
