The Tripura Assembly will reconvene on April 30 for a special session to deliberate on women’s reservation and adopt a resolution on the issue, officials confirmed Thursday. Assembly Secretary Amiya Kanti Nath said the ninth session of the 13th Assembly, adjourned indefinitely on March 23, will resume under Speaker Ram Pada Jamatia’s summons. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath added that similar sessions are planned in other BJP-ruled states to discuss women’s reservation and pass resolutions in support.
The move follows the failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 – which sought to implement 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies by 2029 – to pass in Parliament on April 17. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha criticized the Opposition’s stance, calling it a “Black Day for Indian Democracy” and accusing rival parties of an “anti-women” mindset. He asserted that the Opposition’s rejection of the bill would have political consequences, predicting that women voters would hold them accountable in future elections.
