True success beats social impact: Sharingain

DIMAPUR: Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA), Sharingain Longkumer said true success is measured not merely by academic qualifications or career achievements, but by the positive impact one makes in society.
He was speaking at the Mount Mary College graduation day 2026 as the keynote speaker at the Yashipokla Memorial Hall on Thursday, honouring the graduating batches of 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026. Altogether 142 students received conferral of delegates.
Longkumer congratulated the graduates and acknowledged the dedication of teachers and parents in shaping both their academic journey and character. He emphasized that success is not measured merely by certificates or financial gain, but by the positive difference one makes in the lives of others. He urged students to uphold values of humility, compassion, and commitment while continuously learning, adapting to change, and using their education to create opportunities and bring about positive change.
Highlighting the increasing competition in today’s world, he advised graduates to distinguish themselves by developing life skills and employability skills, stressing the importance of practical knowledge, adaptability, and upgrading skills in emerging fields and technology. He cautioned against excuses or blame, reminding students that success depends on individual choices and discipline.
Longkumer further encouraged graduates to uphold moral values, respect parents and mentors, and remain grounded in faith. He noted that character, discipline, and personal integrity play a crucial role in determining one’s future, urging resilience in both success and failure. He concluded by encouraging students to dream boldly, pursue their goals with determination, and strive to make a meaningful impact in society as responsible citizens and ambassadors of their community and state.
The Award for Academic Excellence for the batch of 2023 was presented to Shangtsala Thonger from the Department of Political Science. For the batch of 2024, the award was conferred on Visono Kehie from the Department of Political Science. The award for the batch of 2025 was received by Sheangpong W. Konyak from the Department of History. For the batch of 2026, the award was presented to Zakieseno Hama from the Department of English.
The Student of the Year Award for the batch of 2023 was awarded to Kuputoli Zhimomi from the Department of Political Science. For the batch of 2024, the award went to Lihyeih T. Konyak from the Department of English. The award for the batch of 2025 was presented to Vezhoto Tetseo from the Department of English. For the batch of 2026, the award was conferred on Biben Yanthan from the Department of History.
A special Award for Academic Excellence (Topper) was also presented to Sheangpong W. Konyak of the Department of History (Batch of 2025), who secured the 8th rank Nagaland University subject topper (2025).
Short speeches were delivered by representatives of the graduating classes including Batch of 2023 Kuputoli Zhimomi, representative batch of 2024 Lishethong, representative batch of 2025 Vikupu Kinny, and representative batch of 2026 Solundo Y.
Other highlights of the day included academic processional of the graduating batches, the event also featured a musical interlude by MMHSS Choir and a faculty address by Deepika Das, and a special musical performance Viketo N of BA 2nd Semester.
Earlier, the program was chaired by Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce, Shilurenla, invocation by College Chaplain Mr. Yanger, a welcome address by Mount Mary College, Managing Director, Dr. C. Teeya Imsong.
The programme concluded with the presentation of certificates, declaration of graduates through the conferral of degrees.
