Tsiepama, Nerhema reconcile after 196 yrs

DIMAPUR, OCT 24 (NPN): The 196-year-old conflict between Tsiepama and Nerhema villages has formally come to an end, ushering in a new chapter of peace, reconciliation and lasting friendship between the two communities.
The historic settlement was reached on October 24, 2026, through mutual dialogue, forgiveness and the observance of traditional Angami Naga customary practices.
The conflict dates back to 1830, when an inter-village war broke out between Zhadima and Nerhema. According to historical accounts, a woman from Tsiepama village who had married into Zhadima lost her son at the hands of warriors from Nerhema. Seeking vengeance for her son’s death, she appealed to her brothers and clansmen in Tsiepama, who subsequently waged war against Nerhema.
The ensuing conflict resulted in the loss of numerous lives on both sides and left a legacy of strained relations that remained unresolved for 196 years.
Although the conflict originated in 1830, no formal settlement had been reached between Tsiepama and Nerhema until October 24, 2026.
The historic reconciliation has now brought closure to the long-standing grievance through dialogue, mutual understanding and forgiveness, reaffirming the role of Angami Naga traditional institutions and customary practices in promoting peace and harmony among villages.
The peace process was facilitated by an organising committee headed by convenor Sevilie Kerhüo and secretary Er. Kekhrielhouto Nakhro, along with other members.
Through peaceful and amicable dialogue, the committee facilitated the reconciliation process, enabling the two villages to move forward in a spirit of mutual respect and goodwill.
As part of the historic occasion, friendship stone-laying ceremonies were held in both Tsiepama and Nerhema villages, symbolically marking the formal end of the age-old conflict and the beginning of a new era of enduring friendship.
After the ceremonies, a formal programme was conducted which was chaired by Dr. Kevizhalhou Kuotsu, while the invocation was offered by Rev. Dr. Tsibu Rutsa. Greetings were delivered by the chairman of Tsiepama Village Council, Seyievizo Visezuo, and the chairman of Nerhema Village Council, Vinguto Rutsa. The organising committee’s report was presented by convenor Sevilie Kerhüo, while the vote of thanks was delivered by Head GB of Nerhema village, Rüünyü Kengurüse. The programme concluded with a benediction by pastor Kevilekho Chalieu of CRC Tsiepama Model Village.
By formally ending the conflict, the two villages have taken a meaningful step towards restoring trust, strengthening inter-village relations and ensuring that future generations inherit a legacy of peace rather than conflict.
