Tsieyama khel under Jotsoma village celebrated its 50th khel day (nuolhou kehou) on Tuesday at Jotsoma Village Council Hall.
The celebration was marked by traditional songs, processions, and speeches that emphasized unity and the importance of preserving age-old traditions.
Addressing the gathering, village elder Khunyü Rino highlighted the significance of the relationships nurtured by their forefathers with various communities and villages.
He said that the khel’s history was rooted in friendships forged even during times of war, which have continued over generations.
“Some of us are related by blood, some through hard times, and others through cordial bonds. We are a small khel, but your friendship and good wishes are our pride,” he remarked.
Rino also stressed the need to renew these ties and ensure younger generations remain connected to their heritage.
Another elder, Seyielhuzo Medoze, reflected on the 50-year journey of the khel. He recalled that in 1970, traditional gates were pulled from the forest with the support of friendly communities, cementing bonds that endure to this day. Medoze urged the need to document and preserve such relationships for future generations.
Representing the younger generation, Visako Rino emphasized the importance of storytelling and passing down traditions to maintain strong ties with other communities.
He urged the youth to learn from their elders, preserve their language, and take pride in their shared heritage.
The event was attended by representatives from various friendly villages and communities across the state.
Earlier, the monolith was unveiled and dedicated by Rev. Fr. Dr. Pezalhoukho George Rino, and the celebration flag was hoisted by Lhusiewhelie Sano.
A souvenir was launched by Lhuvisielie Sano, and special presentations were made by Tsieyama Youth, Tsieyama Students’ Union, and Tsieyama Women Organisation.
The progamme began with an invocation by Pekruyabi Rino, while 98-year-old Toulevi Rino, the oldest person in the khel, offered blessings. The welcome address was delivered by the convenor of the organizing committee, Neivikolie Medoze.
The event was compered by Rokophrezo Rino and Ketholezo Rino, while the monolith unveiling programme was led by Thepfüsalhu Rino.
