DIMAPUR1, AUG 16 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) chairman Q. Tuccu has opposed the proposed border fencing through the Naga homeland and the reported move to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR), asserting that Nagas have the right to free movement and to maintain traditional ties across the border.
In a notification, Tuccu said scrapping the FMR on security grounds was “anti-Naga” as it would restrict the rights of Nagas to nurture cultural and Naga brotherhood at its roots.
Tuccu said that NSCN (I-M) have time and again made it known that erecting fencing through the Naga homeland would be resisted by all means and that Nagas has right to exercise free movement within the Naga homeland.
Tuccu said Nagas have always maintained close ties with neighbouring Naga villages before the Naga homeland was arbitrarily erected with the so-called border pillars, dismembering even the hearths of the homes, which was not only outrageous but suppressive, oppressive and repressive in nature.
He said Nagas will never permit the proposed so-called border fencing through Naga homeland to further alienate the Naga brotherhood.
“Nagas are one wherever they are. Nagas are not illegal immigrants in their own land. Nagas do not object to fencing elsewhere to check the influx of illegal immigrants, but at no cost will Nagas allow their homeland to be fenced/divided to serve the interests of others,” he asserted.
He said that Nagas would not be intimidated by any form of force or other suppressive, oppressive and repressive actions, describing Government of India’s attempt to entice villagers with land compensation for border fencing as a “cheap agenda”.
He urged the guardians and custodians of Naga customary traditions, land and other village resources to remain vigilant and called upon village chiefs and landowners not to succumb to such an approach. He asserted that the rights of Nagas cannot be bartered away for a few dollars.
Tuccu called upon the present Naga generation to stand firm for the future generation, as their forefathers had stood their ground for them.
