The police arrested the two individuals allegedly linked to the radical group during an operation in Imphal West district on Saturday.
The police claimed recovered nine foreign-made weapons – seven HK33 rifles and two M4A1 carbine guns from their possession and alleged that they were involved in possession of illegal arms for the purpose of weapon trafficking and for committing prejudicial activities.
Twenty-eight empty HK33 rifle magazines, two Glock .45 auto pistols with four magazines, eight empty M4A1 carbine magazines, 100 rounds of .45 ammunition in four cases, two luggage bags, four mobile handsets, two wallets containing Rs 4,430, two Aadhaar cards, and a four-wheeler with its key were also recovered from their possessions, the police said.
Both the arrested individuals were produced before court and remanded to nine days’ police custody, the police said today.
According to the sources, the state police department took the matter of recovery of the foreign-made weapons seriously as these arms were not standard issue in India.
The police were looking for a wider cross-border arm trafficking network while investigating the sources of the weapons and those involved in the supply chain.
Meanwhile, the Arambai Tenggol on Monday clarified that the activities of those two arrested with weapons were not connected with the activity of Arambai Tenggol.
“They did it for their personal interest,” the group clarified in a statement.
It said it had repeatedly declared that Arambai Tenggol will not be responsible for any member involved in illegal activity other than ethno-religious and social activities.
