Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that state police have arrested two more individuals for allegedly posting objectionable content against the Hindu religion on social media platforms.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Anisur Rehman from Tinsukia district and Farijul Islam from Nagaon district.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), CM Sarma stated, “Crackdown on Anti-Hindu elements continues. @TinsukiaPolice arrested Md Anisur Rehman for sharing objectionable content on Hinduism. @nagaonpolice arrested Farijul Islam for a derogatory comment on Lord Ram.” He further added, “Ninety-seven anti-national and anti-Hindu culprits behind bars now.”
Prominent Arrests and Allegations
Among the 97 arrests, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam stands out as the first person apprehended in the state for allegedly taking a “pro-Pakistan” stance.
Aminul Islam, who represents the Dhing Assembly constituency, was arrested on May 1 on sedition charges. This followed a provocative statement he made regarding a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives.
In a widely circulated video clip, the AIUDF leader claimed that both the Pahalgam and previous Pulwama attacks were part of a “government conspiracy” aimed at influencing elections. He specifically stated, “Six years ago in Pulwama, when the RDX blast happened and 42 soldiers died, I said on that day that the Pulwama blast happened at the behest of a conspiracy of the Central government, and it was a conspiracy to win the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.”
Regarding the Pahalgam incident, Islam asserted that the BJP was “peddling that the terrorists asked about religion and opened fire only on Hindus, and they let go of Muslims.” He countered this by saying, “But the victims said that the terrorists opened fire without asking about anybody’s name, and I doubt that the nexus which was involved in the Pulwama attack in which RDX was used, is behind the Pahalgam incident.”
He concluded by stating, “If the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government does not conduct a fair investigation into the incident and tries to bring a division between Hindus and Muslims, I would believe that this incident happened because of a conspiracy.”
AIUDF Distances Itself
Following the controversy, AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal distanced his party from Islam’s comments, stating, “AIUDF stands with the government. The terrorists have no religion, and those who spread terrorism are against Islam.”
