A delegation of Ukhrul-based civil society organisations (CSOs) on Saturday called on Manipur chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at his secretariat in Imphal to apprise him of the prevailing situation in the restive district.
State home minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh and Ukhrul MLAs Ram Muivah, Leishiyo Keishing, and Khashim Vashum were also present during the meeting.
According to sources, the delegation highlighted tensions arising from recent incidents in Litan and adjoining areas of Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. They pressed the chief minister to review the government’s decision to hand over the case related to the recovery of two dead bodies at Thawai village to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Confirming the meeting in a social media post, CM Khemchand said the delegation apprised him of the unrest and developmental concerns in Ukhrul. He reiterated that strengthening infrastructure and removing impediments to communal harmony remain key priorities, stressing that peace is the bedrock of all development initiatives. Reliable sources said CSO leaders expressed strong reservations over the NIA handover, echoing concerns raised earlier by the United Naga Council (UNC) and Tangkhul Naga Long Working Committee (TNL WC), which termed the move “selective” and “questionable.”
The delegation also raised issues of disturbances faced by the Tangkhul tribe while travelling along NH-202 (Imphal–Ukhrul) since the outbreak of conflict. In response, the chief minister reportedly assured them of personally visiting the violence-hit areas along with senior police officials.
