Underprivileged and economically disadvantaged students of Forest Colony Government High School, enrolled in the Reading Program, received free umbrellas at an event organized by Bumblebee Society and the school at Forest Colony Community Hall, Kohima on Tuesday.
Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso, MLA of 9th Kohima Town Assembly Constituency, distributed the umbrellas and praised Bumblebee Society for its noble work. He also volunteered to extend support to all government schools within the constituency beyond the Reading Program.
Dr. Tseilhoutuo encouraged the children to prioritize their studies and work hard to become responsible citizens and contributors to society.
The free umbrella distribution was part of Bumblebee Society’s Reading Program, aimed at ensuring students can attend school with dignity despite the early monsoon season. Many children from marginalized families and foster homes face challenges such as lack of basic school necessities and long walks to school without proper protection from rain and sun, affecting their attendance and health.
Speaking at the event, Vikhor Tepa from Bumblebee Society highlighted the organization’s dedication to disability awareness and inclusive education. Since 2011, the Reading Program has worked with children from marginalized communities and those with disabilities, currently operating in two government schools—GMS New Minister’s Hill and GHS Forest Colony—with over 120 enrolled students. The program focuses on strengthening foundational literacy for students in Classes 1-4, including phonics lessons, with 95% of the children coming from foster homes.
Assistant Headmistress of GHS Forest Colony, Swedeseno Zao, expressed gratitude to Dr. Tseilhoutuo for his generosity and concern for the students’ welfare. The MLA also visited classrooms and interacted with students and teachers.
