Even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Assam on April 6, the United Naga Council (UNC), the apex Naga body in Manipur, has drawn his attention to the “infiltration of illegal immigrants in Northeast India”, Newmai News report stated.
In a memorandum addressed to the Prime Minister, UNC said, “We, the undersigned, bring to your notice a pressing concern regarding the issue of infiltration of illegal immigrants in Manipur and other North East states.”
While appreciating his vocal stance on the issue during visits to Assam, UNC expressed concern over the perceived silence on the matter during visits to other Northeast states, particularly Manipur. It stressed that a uniform approach was essential as the issue affects demographic balance and poses a threat to the identity and rights of indigenous communities.
UNC stated that the influx of illegal immigrants has significant demographic, social and economic implications for Manipur and the Northeast, and could impact census and delimitation processes, potentially altering representation of indigenous communities. It urged the Centre to take immediate measures to identify and deport illegal immigrants and provide support and relief to affected communities.
The council also called for a viable mechanism to check the influx through rule of law, including updation of NRC and constitution of a Population Commission.
Stressing the need for a uniform yardstick, UNC requested the Prime Minister’s intervention to ensure that concerns of the people are addressed and a comprehensive policy is put in place.
The memorandum concluded by seeking assurance for necessary action during his visit to Assam on April 6, 2026.
