Shillong, Jun 25: Meghalaya Police have arrested a 22-year-old man Sachin Nishad from Gujarat in connection with a cyber blackmail case linked to the alleged of a woman from South West Khasi Hills district, police said on Thursday.
The victim, a resident of Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills district, allegedly hanged herself on April 19, 2026, after Nishad had reportedly threatened to circulate her private photographs and videos on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Instagram unless she complied with his demands.
Based on an FIR lodged by the victim’s sister, a case was registered at Mawkyrwat Women Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act, and launched the investigation.
During the course of investigation, police located tracked Nishad, a native of Bhidoor, Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, at Surat in Gujarat, and arrested him on June 23 with the assistance of Palasiya Police Station, Banraplang Jyrwa, the district police chief of South West Khasi Hills, said.
Nishad is being produced before the court after being brought to Meghalaya on transit remand.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya Police have urged victims of cyber blackmail, sextortion and online harassment not to suffer in silence and to seek help from law enforcement agencies and support services at the earliest opportunity.
“Cyber blackmail, sextortion, and threats to circulate private content are serious criminal offences and that law enforcement is committed to acting swiftly against offenders,” Jyrwa said.
