
University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) in its university public relations day on Saturday felicitated Nagaland Post, correspondent, Emilo Konyak and other media persons in recognition for their contribution in the field of journalism.
Speaking at the event held at Hotel Landmark, Guwahati, Chancellor, USTM and Chairman of ERD Foundation, Mahbubul Hoque, said USTM PR day was a special event organised for the media fraternity where the university take the opportunity to recognise the efforts of journalist from across the region.
He said “We strongly feel that journalists play a very important role in bringing about a change in the society.”
In her acceptance speech, Emilo thanked the Education Research and Development Foundation for the recognition and the jury members for nominating her for the “prestigious award”.
She attributed her success to Nagaland Post, Editor-in-chief Sir Geoffery Yaden and Nagaland Post executive editor & director, Aochuba Yaden for being her “driving force”. She added that her editor has been her mentor, guide and inspiration. She also thanked her husband, parents and in-laws for their support and encouragement.
Emilo said that her work for “free speech” has made her a better and more responsible citizen. She said the inherent power of the media has given corrupt and tyrannical governments sleepless nights and the fourth estate has immense power, to expose evil and cause positive change.
Emilo said no matter what the consequences, journalism is a powerful job that comes with a high price and urged all media persons present to remember that success is always accompanied by huge challenges and urged them to be vigorous, vigilant for free press to have democracy blossom to its fullness.
Other media persons awarded in the event includes, Nitumoni Saikia (Editor in Chief, Pratidin Times), Prasanta Rajguru (Executive Editor, Amar Axom), Snigdha Sikha Borah (DY 365), Chaya Moni Bhuyan (Political Editor, News Live), Nasreen Habib (Editor, Eclectic), Mamta Misra (The Assam Tribune) and Bireshwar Das (Dainik Jugasankha).
Dignitaries present at the event were former Governor of Meghalaya, R.S. Mooshahary; VC, AST, Dhiraj Bora and principal adviser, ERDF, Professor N.K. Chaudhury.
The awards distribution program for the 2nd North East College Magazine competition was also held. The day was marked by award felicitation of media personalities, announcement of several educational schemes for the media by Education Research and Development Foundation (ERDF), Award distribution program of 2nd North East College Magazine competition and Presentation of USTM Report Card for the year gone by.
