Various programmes & activities for students, faculty

Educational institutions and other organisations organised various programmes for the students, teaching and non-teaching staff as part of their academic and extracurricular activities. Unity College: A two-day national level seminar on the theme, “Religion and Society of North East India: Exploring New Frontiers” hosted by the department of sociology at Unity College (UC) Dimapur and sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research North Eastern Regional Centre commenced Wednesday at UC premises.


Addressing the seminar as the keynote speaker, Professor Chandan Kumar Sharma from Tezpur University’s department of sociology, delved into various crucial aspects of religion’s role in society, particularly within the context of northeast India. Professor Sharma underscored how religion has historically shaped social structures and highlighted the evolution of religion over time, including its diverse influence on indigenous cultures and traditions in the region, shaped by human-environmental interactions.


The speaker discussed the multifaceted role of religion in identity formation, state development, and political solidarity. He also addressed criticisms and challenges related to studying and understanding religion, such as misinterpretations, stereotyping, and neglecting spiritual and philosophical aspects in favour of empirical observation.


Professor Sharma noted variations due to differences in consciousness and geographical environments, alongside concerns about preserving traditional culture in the modern world. He addressed societal issues such as gender roles and the impact of development on traditional practices.


The speaker also raised concerns about the loss of indigenous languages and cultures, advocating the need to understand these changes’ implications on religious identities and social harmony. The second day’s highlights included a special lecture by assistant professor Dr. Kanato Chophy from Dibrugarh University’s Department of Anthropology on “Religion in the Border-Lands”. Over 10 paper presenters covering diverse topics would be presented during the two-day seminar. (Staff Reporter)


NITI Dimapur: Nationalist Institute of Technology and Innovation (NITI) Dimapur celebrated its 25th Foundation Day Wednesday, wherein Lord’s NITI Nagaland CEO, Er. Rishav Sethi, highlighted the importance of understanding societal needs and embracing technology for societal progress.


Er. Sethi underscored the challenges and opportunities associated with rapid technological advancement and stressed the significance of entrepreneurship, problem-solving, and shifting mindset towards proactive solutions. He encouraged the gathering to recognize the power of technology and to understand the significance and the power tech holds on people. He said technology was essential in addressing societal challenges and asked people to cultivate a mindset of innovation and adaptation. Short speeches were also delivered by the alumnus of NITI Dimapur, Owdang O Phom and Norman Putsure College MD, Seneinuo Putsure. (Staff Reporter)


Northfield School Khikha: NAGABOTS organised “TECHMORPHOSIS 2024” under the theme, “innovation in motion” on March 26 at Northfield School Khikha, Kohima. During the programme, director, department of industries and commerce, A. Temjen Jamir, highlighted students on the importance of cultivating a curiosity to learn and innovate. He encouraged them to think creatively and outside the conventional norms to strengthen their foundational skills.


Jamir underscored the continuous process of learning and growth and urged the students to remain open-minded and receptive to new ideas and experiences. Emphasising the importance of hard work and perseverance, he encouraged the students to set their sights on extending their reach and impact beyond the confines of Nagaland. In a short speech, NAGABOTS director, Er. Kikrukhrielie Khezhie, expounded upon the core ethos of TECHMORPHOSIS, emphasising its instrumental role in propelling technological advancement and nurturing the ingenuity of the youth.


Startup team leader and deputy director of Industries and commerce, Er. Keneirienuo K Theunuo, spoke about building an innovative culture, saying “Creativity is thinking up new things. Innovation is doing new things.” (Correspondent)


GHSS Mon: Department of Home Guards and Civil Defence (HG&CD) along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Mon conducted training on disaster management for students and staff of Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Mon on March 27. According to a DIPR report, during the training, personnel of HG&CD and SDRF led by Lipoksashi Aier demonstrated on CPR, bandaging and emergency method of rescuing under the supervision of company commander, Lichemse Sangtam.


KSC (A): A workshop on the theme, “small scale vermicompost unit in rural sectors” was organised by the department of zoology, Kohima Science College (Autonomous), Jotsoma Tuesday at Jotsoma Village Council Hall. KSC said the workshop was part of the department’s extension cum community service rendered to neighbouring villages and was aimed to educate participants about the benefits and techniques of vermicomposting, particularly in rural areas.


Yingli College: An outreach awareness programme on the theme, “value of right to vote in the democracy” was organised by the Teachers and students of the department of political science, Yingli College, Longleng on March 23 at Oushok Village. According to a DIPR report, the college stated that the aim was to sensitise students to the needs of society and their role in the community, state and nation building.


Immanuel College: Celebrating the importance of the theatrical arts to preserve, promote and continuing the uniqueness of Naga culture through the performance of the students, the department of history, Immanuel College observed “World Theatre Day” under the theme, “‘Revisiting the Roots 2.0” on March 27 at the College Auditorium.


The college informed that the event showcased the vibrant and exuberant cultural performances in various categories viz. folk song, folk drama and folk dance. The event also exhibited indigenous cuisines of Naga tribes which were prepared by the students.
