The Viksit Bharat Yuva Connect Programme 2025, featuring district-level Youth Parliament and Debate Competitions, was held on August 6 in Kohima and Mokokchung, engaging students in critical discussions on democratic values and civic leadership.
According to DIPR report, in Kohima, the event was hosted at Kohima College and organised by the NSS Unit of Kohima College in collaboration with the District Youth Resources Office and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS), under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
Students from St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama, Alder College, and Kohima College participated in the day-long programme.
Deputy Commissioner Kohima, B. Henok Buchem, in his address, emphasized the importance of youth participation in building a developed India by 2047. He described the Emergency of 1975 as a dark chapter in India’s democratic history and encouraged students to uphold democratic values. He also invited civil service aspirants to spend a day in his office for real-world exposure to public administration.
Principal of Kohima College, Dr. Vitsosie Vupru, welcomed participants and dignitaries, describing the event as a celebration of ideas and democratic engagement. The debate competition on the topic “Emergency Period in India” was moderated by Dr. Limayangla Pongener, Assistant Professor, department of English. The Youth Parliament session simulated legislative proceedings, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding of parliamentary protocols.
In the debate competition, Vuruthong (St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama) secured first place, followed by Yukhase Jingru (Kohima College). In the Youth Parliament, Kajol Kumari (Alder College) emerged as the winner, with Alika T. Yeptho (Alder College) and Elvina Khangshou (St. Joseph’s College, Jakhama) securing second and third positions respectively. Judges included Medo Chale (Japfü Christian College), Dr. Ketoukhrie-ü (Kohima College), and entrepreneur Vikhotuo Sekhose. The programme was chaired by Zavikhoto Phinyo, Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Khrieneikuo Zumu, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology.
Meanwhile, in Mokokchung, the programme was held at Jubilee Memorial College Hall, Aongza Ward, organised by Nehru Yuva Kendra, NSS, and the Department of Political Science, JMC, in collaboration with the District Youth Resource & Sports Office Mokokchung.
Deputy Commissioner Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, graced the event as special guest. He urged students to be resilient leaders and emphasized the importance of understanding the Constitution, laws, and political structure of the country. He highlighted the role of diversity and fundamental rights in shaping a strong nation.
In the Youth Parliament competition, Imlibenla, Nikili, and Menangniba from the Ruling Bench secured first, second, and third positions respectively, while Riya Dey, Longcha, and Wapangtola from the Opposition Bench won the top three positions. In the debate competition, Sashikumzuk, Imnatula, and Sentipongla were declared winners.
The programme was chaired by Chubaienla Imchen, HoD & Assistant Professor, Department of Economics. Welcome address was delivered by District Sports Officer Zhopovi Zecho, and a special song was presented by Samuel, BA 3rd Semester. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Bendangwabang, HoD & Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science.
