Village functionaries urged to maintain transparency

Along with the rest of the country, Wokha district celebrated MGNREGA Day here at DBS Youth Centre with the Deputy Commissioner, Wokha, A Robin Lotha as chief guest on February 2.
Addressing hundreds of participants including village council chairmen, VDB secretaries and women VDB members representing villages around Wokha district, the chief guest appealed the village functionaries to be aware of their roles and responsibilities and to carry out assigned tasks efficiently. 
Lotha also told the gathering that as village leaders, the participants should have proper planning and vision, and above all, transparency, in the process of implementing various schemes and policies under MGNREGA.
Emphasizing on judicious use of funds, the DC also urged the village council chairmen and VDB secretaries to focus their schemes and projects with a view to generate income which would benefit the whole community. 
He further urged all villages to carry out audit periodically so that transparency and accountability prevailed in the implementation of schemes under MGNREGA.
DRDA Wokha Project Director, Liboni Humtsoe, who delivered keynote address, said that as the nation and the district celebrated MGNREGA Day, it was also time for introspection and retrospection with regard to the successes and failures of schemes under MGNREGA in the participants’ respective villages. 
Elaborating on the same theme, Mrs Humtsoe asked the village functionaries to ask themselves how much they have developed their respective villages using the funds provided by the government. The Project Director also urged all VDB secretaries and village councils to maintain proper records of schemes and policies implemented in their respective villages.
DRDA Wokha APC, M Mathew Yhome, highlighted in brief the various aspects as well as the importance of IEC (Information, Education, and Communication) in the implementation of MGNREGA schemes.
Short speeches were also delivered by Wokha District VDB Association president, E Bichamo Shitiri, Ralan Block BDO Ekonthung Ngullie, Sanis Block BDO Mhabemo Humtsoe, and Wokha Block BDO Thungbeni Ngullie.
Earlier, T Penthungo Lotha presented a special number at the celebratory function chaired by DRDA Wokha DPO Nchumthung Ngullie, and Wozhuro BDO Thungchanbemo proposed the vote of thanks.
In a related programme, DRDA Kohima has observed the MGNREGA Day at DPDB conference hall, Kohima, on February 2 with DRD Blocks Additional Director, Hilo Semp, as the chief guest.
The programme was well attended by representatives from all the VDBs including women representatives under Kohima district.
In his speech, the chief guest emphasized the importance of cooperation/ accountability and transparency among the VDBs and department. He also emphasized the importance of MIS and IEC.
Tseminyu and Phesama were awarded the best Block and VDB respectively.
Project Director, DRDA Kohima, Kevipodi Sophie, delivered the keynote address. The programme was chaired by DRDA APO, Bendangwatila Jamir, while VDB representatives from Kohima and Jakhama and BDO Tseminyu Block gave short speeches. BDO Jakhama Block Khovi Thaprü delivered the vote of thanks.
Peren district has also observed the MGNREGA Day New Peren DC headquarters on February 2 with the Deputy Commissioner, Peren, Peter Lichamo as the chief guest.
The DC, in his speech, has encouraged the VDBs to maintain records, fund figures and cooperate with the department for further development. He has also briefed on the functioning of the village administration.
The programme was chaired by Ajungba Yaden, APC, DRDA, Peren, while short speeches were delivered by Temjennuken, PO, DRDA, Peren, and Thungdeno, Joint Director, Directorate of RD.
Dimapur District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) along with six RD blocks including the village development board (VDB) secretaries comprising hundred villages has observed MGNREGA Day in the conference hall of Lotha Hoho at DC Court Junction. The day was observed on the theme “transforming lives through MGNREGA.”
Asangla T Aier, Project Director, DRDA Dimapur, presented a broad outline on Information Education and Communication (IEC)/MGNREGA. Stating that the lives of rural people have been transformed with the introduction of MGNREGA in the country, she said many development schemes have been implemented in the villages and for which people should be thankful to the government for bringing development to the doorstep. 
The Project Director also urged the VBD secretaries to have a sense of responsibility and announced to give an award to the best performing VDB in next year’s celebration of MGNGRGA Day. 
Block Development Officers of all RD Block of the district presented a report on IEC/MGNREGA activities.
Meanwhile, Mon district has also observed ‘MGNREGA DAY’ at the Resource Centre DRDA, Mon, with Angau I Thou, Deputy Commissioner and CEO DRDA Mon, as the chief guest.
Stating that the ‘MGNREGA’ was purely a ‘grassroot level project’, the Deputy Commissioner urged upon the gathering to unite and maintain transparency and accountability and follow the laid down guidelines while implementing the MGNREGA projects. 
She has appealed to fully and judiciously utilize the project to develop the villages. Further reminding that the VDB Secretaries should work under the directives of their respective village councils, the DC warned the VDB’s to be cautious in utilizing the funds allotted to their respective villages. She also urged upon the gathering, representing their villages to disseminate the norms and procedure learnt during seminars and workshops to the villagers.  
The program was attended by VDB Secretaries, Village Council Chairmen and women representatives of all the villages.
