A joint eviction drive by Assam and Nagaland government on August 18, at Krishnapur area under Liphayan jurisdiction could not be carried out after villagers of Liphayan obstructed the process, claiming that the land belonged to the village jurisdiction.
The incident happened at around 11 a.m. Monday when nearly 90 villagers gathered at the eviction site and stopped the officials from proceeding. The villagers claimed that they had every right over the site as landowners and claimed they had even demolished houses in the area last week. They claimed that they had demolished the houses mainly because some of the evicted illegal immigrants from other areas were coming to the site at night for refuge. Around 29 houses were destroyed 29 in Krishnapur area under Liphayan village, they said.
Border Magistrate of Uriamghat, Tsenthungo E. Ngullie informed Nagaland Post that the eviction in the disputed area has been put on hold and will only be taken up after deliberations between the two States.
Meanwhile, plantation activities and erection of pillars are ongoing at Bidyapur, while another joint eviction drive was successfully carried out at Haldibari area under Wochan village, where a total of 41 houses were evicted.
