WAPO appeals for urgent repairs on NH-29 landslide-hit stretches

DIMAPUR, JUL 27 (NPN): Western Angami Public Organization (WAPO) has appealed to the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and the Nagaland Public Works Department (NPWD) to urgently repair road stretches damaged by sinking and landslides along NH-29.
In an open appeal, WAPO president Theyievilie Suohumvü and general secretary Kezhaselie K. Kuotsu highlighted the deteriorating condition of roads at Kezanu (Old KMC Dumping Site), Liezocha, the Bypass Petrol Pump area, and the landslide-hit stretch at Melierü (NH-29) near Dzüdza village.
The organisation said incessant rainfall over the past few months had triggered repeated road sinking and landslides, causing extensive damage to these key routes connecting Dimapur, Kohima and other parts of the state. It noted that large potholes, cracks and uneven road surfaces had developed, posing serious risks to motorists and commuters.
Expressing concern that monsoon season was expected to continue beyond October, WAPO warned that the situation could worsen further, making some stretches increasingly hazardous and potentially impassable.
The organisation has, therefore, urged the authorities to immediately undertake repair and restoration work, strengthen vulnerable sections to prevent further sinking and landslides, and ensure regular long-term maintenance to provide safe and uninterrupted connectivity. WAPO expressed hope that the authorities would act without delay. It cautioned that if necessary remedial measures were not taken, the organisation could be compelled to initiate appropriate measures in the interest of public safety and welfare.
