Expressing concern over the outbreak of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in cattle, the Ward 21 Welfare Committee has appealed to the veterinary department and the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) to promptly address the issue as the outbreak has stoked public concern about eating meat.
In a press release, Ward-21 welfare committee convenor D. Jonah Achumi and secretary Omega G. Naga stated that due to outbreak of LSD, which mostly affects animals, many consumers were concerned about the safety of eating beef. The committee reminded that the department was required to continuously monitor livestock health in coordination with the appropriate authorities in order to quickly detect and contain any disease outbreaks.
It stated that in order to guarantee the security of meat entering the market, routine inspections, post-mortem investigations and laboratory testing should be conducted. Further, to stop the spread of LSD from animals to humans, the committee suggested strict implementation of rules and procedures.
In the light of the above, the committee has asked the DMC and the veterinary department to clarify whether beef consumption was safe at the moment.
