Waste management woes persist in Wokha dumping site

CorrespondentWOKHA, JUL 18 (NPN)

Waste management continues to pose a challenge in Wokha town, with the current designated dumping site along the Wokha-Bokajan road near Pongitong village drawing concern over lack of proper maintenance.
According to commuters, solid waste from Wokha town is reportedly transported to the site three times a week– on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays—but without adequate infrastructure or containment measures in place. As a result, garbage has begun to spill beyond the dumping area, with waste scattered along the roadside and even on the opposite side of the road.
Residents and travellers have noted that the site lacks basic safeguards such as fencing or proper segregation of waste, leading to unpleasant odours and unsanitary conditions.
The current site was chosen about two years ago after the previous dumping location near Banka area under Wokha village was discontinued. That site, which lacked proper retaining structures, saw waste rolling down into farmlands, damaging crops and contaminating the soil—prompting the Wokha Village Council to restrict further dumping there.
With similar concerns now surfacing at the new location, residents and commuters are calling for urgent intervention by the authorities to improve waste handling practices. They have stressed the need for proper fencing, systematic waste segregation, and the construction of retaining structures to prevent further environmental impact.
