Weavers’ Service Centre observes 7th National Handloom Day

The 7th national handloom day was observed at Weavers’ Service Centre (WSC), Toluvi village, here, on Saturday.

Addressing the celebration as chief guest, director of industry and commerce, K Hokishe Assumi acknowledged the potentiality of handloom in the state, however, he lamented that the marketing and production was not up to the mark.

Pointing out that weavers in the state were still practising traditional looms, Hokishe said that in order to be beneficial commercially, they needed to adapt to flying shuttle loom. 

He advised the gathering to share ideas and encourage the NGOs that were genuinely working for the people.

On the occasion, development commissioner (handlooms) WSC Dimapur, assistant director (weaving), Naresh Jambhulkar said that products from North East region had a lot of scope.

In this regard, he informed that many exhibitions showcasing North East products were occasionally organised in different parts of India.

Jambhulkar urged weavers from North East region to participate in exhibition melas sponsored by the government of India.

Highlighting about the legacy of handloom in India, general manager of NHHDC Ltd. Dimapur, Narola Alemba Jamir said that the first national handloom day was inaugurated on August 7, 2015 by prime minister Narendra Modi to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the swadeshi movement.
