
Two-day national webinar on “Deciphering the roles of biodiversity and sustainability” was organised by Department of Botany in collaboration with IQAC, St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama on August 12-13.
A press release by the college stated that the keynote speaker was principal scientist (agronomy), joint director, ICAR, Nagaland Centre, Dr. Lohit K. Baishya and resource persons were head department of history, Don Bosco College Kohima, Dr. Lanukumla Ao; associate professor, department of botany, Nagaland University, Lumami campus, Dr. Neizo Puro and senior program officer, directorate of IT and communication, Er. Samuel Zeliang.
Highlighting on “biodiversity, conservation and climate change”, Dr. Baishya stressed upon food scarcity and malnutrition problem faced in the world today due to shortage of food supply.
He said sustainable and integrated form of agriculture plays a role not only in meeting the food requirements but also as a conservative strategy.
Dr. Baishya said the importance of biodiversity was not only in structure like cover and aesthetics but also in function like maintaining nutrient cycle, carbon fixation, water cycle etc. In the technical sessions, Dr. Lanukumla spoke on “Sacred Groves – Repositories of rich heritage and tools for biodiversity conservation: the Naga chapter”; Dr. Neizo delivered talk on “Biodiversity and Sustainable Livelihood in the North-East Tribals of India”; Er. Samuel spoke on “E-waste management.”
