Wimbledon: Alcaraz into 3rd round with win over Tarvet

Carlos Alcaraz stayed on course for a third straight Wimbledon title as the Spaniard defeated British qualifier Oliver Tarvet 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Wednesday.
Second seed Alcaraz will be up against either 25th-seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime or Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round.
Sabalenka holds firm to reach third round
World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka produced another composed and powerful display on Centre Court, defeating Marie Bouzkova 7-6(4), 6-4 on Wednesday to book her place in the third round of Wimbledon 2025.
Sabalenka, known for her blistering shot-making and aggression, was tested early by the crafty and defensive Bouzkova.
But the Belarusian brought her trademark intensity and poise at key moments to stretch her unbeaten record in Grand Slam second rounds to 18 straight.
Her next opponent will be either 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova or British star Emma Raducanu, both Grand Slam winners and formidable threats.
Norrie stun Tiafoe
Britain’s Cameron Norrie returned to his favourite patch of Wimbledon turf to stun American 12th seed Frances Tiafoe and reach the third round with a 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-5 win on Wednesday.
Court One might lack the aura of the All England Club’s historic Centre Court, but Norrie loves it, having won three matches there during his semi-final run in 2022.
Joao is youngest player since 2011 to reach 3rd-rd
Joao Fonseca continued his remarkable rise on Wednesday, making history as he reached the third round of Wimbledon in his debut appearance at the prestigious tournament. The 18-yr-old Brazilian overcame American Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in a gritty, wind-swept battle that lasted over three hours.
In just his fourth career tour-level event on grass, Fonseca showcased maturity beyond his years. His victory also made him the youngest man to reach the third round at Wimbledon since Bernard Tomic in 2011. Now, with momentum and confidence on his side, Fonseca prepares to face qualifier Nicolas Jarry in the next round.
