World number one Jannik Sinner bulldozed into the last 16 at Wimbledon, crushing Spaniard Pedro Martinez 6-1 6-3 6-1 in a ruthless Centre Court demolition job on Saturday, reports Sportstar.
Martinez looked to be struggling with a shoulder problem, with the trainer twice called on court, but Sinner showed no mercy to complete his third consecutive straight-sets victory at the All England Club.
The 23-year-old has dropped 17 games in his three matches at an average of less than two per set, in an ominous warning to his rivals for the title. The top seed, bidding to become Italy’s first Wimbledon champion, has yet to lose his serve and will next face either Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov or Austria’s Sebastian Ofner.
Teenager Andreeva marches into Wimbledon last 16
Seventh seed Mirra Andreeva outclassed American Hailey Baptiste 6-1 6-3 under the Court One roof to equal her best Wimbledon run by reaching the last 16 on Saturday. Seventh seed Mirra Andreeva outclassed American Hailey Baptiste 6-1 6-3 under the Court One roof to equal her best Wimbledon run by reaching the last 16 on Saturday.
In a first week littered with fallen seeds, 18-year-old Andreeva has made reaching the business end of the tournament look like a breeze and is yet to drop a set. She has reached the third round of the doubles too with partner Diana Shnaider, also without losing a set. The Russian’s clean hitting proved too much for 55th-ranked Baptiste who has enjoyed an impressive Wimbledon main draw debut, having reached the fourth round at Roland Garros.
Rybakina sent tumbling out of Wimbledon third round by inspired Tauson
Former champion Elena Rybakina was sent spinning out of the Wimbledon third round on Saturday, the 11th-seeded Kazakh undone by the irresistible momentum of Denmark’s Clara Tauson.
On a blustery Court Two, Tauson – previously winless in three main-draw visits to the All England Club – barely put a toe out of line, breezing through their rain-interrupted duel 7-6(6) 6-3. Her serve crackled, her groundstrokes thundered, and Rybakina, for all her pedigree, never glimpsed a foothold. This was a statement victory for the 22-year-old Dane, seeded 23rd, who at last broke her duck against the 2022 Wimbledon champion after two prior defeats.
Tauson now marches into a meeting with either eighth seed Iga Swiatek or American Danielle Collins, with a coveted quarter-final berth in her sights.
